Handling Ethical Dilemmas

Show how you handle technical decisions with moral, legal or social stakes: name the harm clearly, raise it through the right channels, and act with integrity if you are overruled.

Overview

Engineers make decisions that affect people: what data a feature collects, who an automated decision can hurt, what a default nudges users to do. Interviewers ask about ethical dilemmas to see whether you notice these stakes, whether you can name a concern precisely, and whether you raise it in a way that gets it heard.

They are not looking for a moral hero who blocks work alone, or for someone who has never had a concern. They want a colleague who spots the risk early, frames it as a clear problem with facts, uses the proper channels in order, and behaves professionally whatever the decision.

A precise concern gets heard; a vague one does not. 'This feels wrong' starts an argument. 'This feature keeps collecting location in the background after users turn it off, which our privacy policy says we do not do' starts a fix.

The example stories on this page are fiction. They show the shape of a strong answer; use your own.

  • Noticing — Spotted the risk before launch — Noticed after harm, or never
  • Precision — Named who is harmed, how, and which rule or promise is broken — 'It felt wrong'
  • Channels — Team, then manager, then legal, privacy or ethics teams — Went outside first, or stayed silent
  • Alternatives — Offered a way to meet the goal with less harm — Only objected
  • Outcome — Acted with integrity, whatever was decided — Blocked work alone, or gave up at once

What you will be able to do

  • Turn a vague unease into a precise concern that others can act on.
  • Describe the order in which you would raise a concern, and why.
  • Explain privacy basics you apply as an engineer, such as collecting only the data you need.
  • Talk about a time you were overruled without sounding bitter or naive.

Interview questions

  • How do you raise an ethical concern about a product or technical decision?
  • Tell me about a time you disagreed with a product decision on ethical grounds.
  • How do you think about privacy and user data in your work?
  • What would you do if you were asked to build something you believed was harmful?
