Rolling vs Blue-Green Deployment

Incremental in-place replacement versus full environment swap for production releases.

Overview

What is being compared

Both are ways to release a new version to production. A rolling deployment replaces instances one by one, or in small batches, and keeps service capacity throughout. Blue-green keeps a complete parallel environment and switches traffic atomically.

  • How it updates — Replaces instances in place, one or a batch at a time — Builds a full parallel environment, then switches
  • Extra capacity — Surge instances only, for a short time — 100% of production capacity in parallel
  • Mixed versions — Old and new serve together for the whole rollout — None after the switch
  • Rollback — Re-roll every instance, as long as the deploy itself — Instant, at the load balancer
  • Kubernetes support — Default Deployment strategy — Needs Argo Rollouts, Flagger or manual label changes
  • Overall — Simpler and cheaper — Instant rollback, clean cutover

> [!WARNING] The mixed-version window means a rolling deploy is unsafe for a change that breaks API or schema compatibility.
