Platform Engineering Maturity Model
CNCF Platform Engineering Maturity Model: four levels across five aspects — investment, adoption, interfaces, operations, measurement — plus how to run a platform as a product and measure whether it is working.
Overview
Overview
The CNCF Platform Engineering Whitepaper (2022, updated 2023) defines platform engineering as building internal products that accelerate application teams by reducing cognitive load and eliminating repetitive infrastructure tasks.
The maturity model
The companion CNCF Platform Engineering Maturity Model grades a platform at one of four levels across five aspects.
- Provisional, Operational, Scalable, Optimizing — Investment, adoption, interfaces, operations, measurement
> [!IMPORTANT] Grading each aspect separately is the point, because the common real-world shape is uneven.
Golden paths and cognitive load
Golden paths are opinionated, pre-built workflows that let application teams deploy a new service without understanding the full infrastructure stack.
> [!TIP] Cognitive load reduction is the primary success metric: if developers spend less time on infrastructure, the platform is succeeding.
What senior engineers are expected to do
- Benchmark the platform — Grade each aspect against the model
- Articulate a roadmap — Plan the next level for the weakest aspects
