E-commerce Product Page

Build a product listing page with image gallery, variant selection, cart management, checkout flow, and responsive design.

Overview

Create a Shopify-style product browsing experience: product grid, detail page with image carousel, size/color variant picker, add-to-cart with quantity, persistent cart sidebar, and a multi-step checkout form. Focuses on e-commerce UI patterns and state management.

E-commerce product pages are the bread and butter of web development. Nearly every frontend developer will build or maintain an e-commerce UI at some point in their career, and the patterns involved (image galleries, variant matrices, cart state management, and multi-step forms) appear in countless other contexts. Building a polished product page from scratch demonstrates that you understand conversion-focused design and complex state orchestration.

The variant selection system is particularly interesting from an engineering perspective. You need to model a matrix of options (sizes times colors), map each combination to a SKU with its own price, inventory count, and product image, and disable unavailable combinations while keeping the interface intuitive. This is the exact problem that Shopify, Amazon, and Nike solve, and understanding the data model behind it shows real-world engineering depth.

For interviews, this project works especially well at e-commerce companies, agencies, and any role that involves building consumer-facing UIs. The cart implementation with Zustand persistence, the image gallery with zoom interaction, and the multi-step checkout form each provide rich material for technical discussions.

Interview questions

  • How should I manage cart state?
  • How do I build the image gallery?
  • How do variant selections work?
  • What checkout flow is expected?
  • How do I handle the responsive layout?
  • How do I optimize product image performance?
