Music Visualizer

Build a music visualizer that analyzes audio in real time using the Web Audio API and renders frequency spectrum, waveform, and particle effects on canvas.

Overview

Create an audio-reactive visual experience. Users upload a song or use microphone input, and the visualizer renders real-time frequency bars, waveform oscilloscopes, and particle systems that react to beat detection. This project showcases advanced browser APIs and creative coding.

Music visualizers sit at the intersection of audio processing, graphics programming, and creative design. The Web Audio API provides real-time frequency and time-domain data from any audio source, and you translate that data into visual representations on Canvas or WebGL. The result is a mesmerizing audiovisual experience that reacts to every beat, melody, and bass drop.

This project exercises browser APIs that most developers never touch. The AudioContext graph model (source nodes, analyzer nodes, gain nodes connected in a chain) is conceptually similar to signal processing pipelines in embedded systems. Understanding FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) output, frequency bin mapping, and energy-based beat detection gives you DSP knowledge that transfers to audio, video, and data analysis domains.

For interviews, this project is a standout because it is visually stunning and technically deep. Live demos are inherently impressive, and the underlying engineering (real-time rendering loops, typed array manipulation, Web Audio graph management) demonstrates skills that go well beyond typical CRUD applications.

Interview questions

  • How does the Web Audio API work?
  • How do I detect beats?
  • Canvas or WebGL?
  • How do I handle different audio sources?
  • How do I map frequency data to visual properties?
  • How do I build the particle system?
