Sorting Visualizer
Build an interactive sorting algorithm visualizer with step-by-step animations, adjustable speed, and multiple algorithm support.
Overview
Create a web app that visually demonstrates how sorting algorithms work in real time. Users select an algorithm, adjust array size and speed, then watch bars animate through each comparison and swap. This project is a staple portfolio piece because it proves you understand both algorithms and frontend animation.
Sorting visualizers are one of the most recognizable CS education tools on the internet. Building one from scratch forces you to internalize how each algorithm partitions, compares, and rearranges data. Beyond academic value, this project exercises practical frontend skills: managing complex async state, coordinating animation frames with user input, and rendering hundreds of DOM elements performantly with CSS transitions.
From an interview perspective, this project hits multiple dimensions simultaneously. It shows algorithmic literacy (you implemented six different sorts), frontend engineering chops (animation engine, responsive layout, keyboard shortcuts), and software architecture discipline (separating pure algorithm logic from UI rendering). Very few portfolio projects demonstrate all three at once.
The finished product is also instantly impressive in a live demo. Interviewers can watch algorithms race, see the visual difference between O(n squared) and O(n log n), and interact with speed and size controls. It turns an abstract whiteboard concept into something tangible and memorable.
Interview questions
- Which sorting algorithms should I implement?
- How do I animate the sorting process?
- What makes this impressive to interviewers?
- How should I structure the codebase?
- What deployment approach works best?
- How do I handle Merge Sort visualization since it uses auxiliary space?
