Adaptability & Change

How to answer questions about a major change at work, a sudden shift in priorities, or learning a new tool fast.

Overview

Plans change all the time in software teams. Priorities move mid-sprint, teams are reorganized, companies are acquired, and tools are replaced. Adaptability questions ask how you behave when that happens: 'Tell me about a time you had to adapt to a big change', 'How do you handle shifting priorities?', 'Tell me about learning something new under time pressure'.

The interviewer is not looking for someone who likes every change. They want to see that you understand why the change happened, that you adjust your plan quickly and in the open, and that you help the people around you adjust too. They also want to see that you push back when a change has a real cost that nobody has named.

A weak answer either complains about the change or claims you adapted with no effort. A strong answer shows a concrete change, what it cost, the steps you took, and a result that is better than simply surviving it.

  • Attitude — Asks why the change happened, then acts — Complains, or waits to be told what to do
  • Trade-offs — Names what the change costs and tells people — Quietly absorbs extra work
  • Learning — A clear plan to get up to speed — 'I just figured it out'
  • Others — Helps teammates through the change — Only talks about themselves
  • Result — Something better came out of it — 'We got through it'

Every story and sample line on this page is fiction, written as an example.
