Debugging Distributed Systems
Tell the story of a bug that crossed service boundaries: how you narrowed it down with traces, metrics and logs, what the root cause was, and what you changed so it would not happen again.
Overview
In a single program, a bug usually lives in one place and a debugger can find it. In a distributed system, one user request may touch ten services, two queues and a database, and the fault can sit in any of them, or in the network between them. Some failures only appear when several parts interact: a slow dependency, a wave of retries, clocks that disagree.
Interviewers ask about this to see how you think under uncertainty. They want a method, not luck: you measured the symptom, formed a guess, tested it with data, and narrowed the search step by step. They also listen for whether you look beyond your own code, at the network, the infrastructure and the config, and whether you fixed the class of problem, not just the one incident.
- Method — Hypothesis, test, narrow down, repeat — Tried random fixes until one worked
- Observability — Uses traces, metrics and logs together, joined by a request ID — Read one service's logs
- Breadth — Checked network, infra and config, not only app code — Assumed it was the code
- Stabilize first — Mitigated user impact, then found the cause — Debugged while users kept failing
- Lasting fix — Added an alert, a test or a guard for the whole class — Fixed one bug and moved on
What you will be able to do
- Tell a cross-service debugging story in STAR form with a clear method.
- Explain how traces, metrics and logs each help, and how a trace ID ties them together.
- Name the common distributed failure modes and the standard defense for each.
- Show what you changed afterward so the next incident is shorter.
Interview questions
- Tell me about an issue you debugged that spanned multiple services.
- How do you trace a request through a microservices system?
- What are the common distributed failure modes?
