Technical Leadership & Strategy

How to show you can set technical direction, make and record big design decisions, grow other engineers, and explain engineering risk in business terms.

Overview

Technical leadership is the move from 'I write good code' to 'I shape how a team or a system is built'. Interviewers probe it for senior and lead roles because it is a different skill set. You set a direction others follow, make design decisions with incomplete information, grow other engineers, and speak for engineering when product and business people decide.

The most common failure is staying too small. The candidate describes a clever function they wrote, or one code review, when the question asks about a system or a team. Match the scale of the question: systems rather than functions, teams rather than one person, quarters rather than sprints.

The second failure is vagueness. 'I set the technical vision' says nothing unless you can say what the vision was, how you got people to agree, what changed, and how you knew it worked.

  • Scope — A system or several teams — One function or one ticket
  • Concreteness — 'We moved every service to one retry library' — 'I improved reliability'
  • Influence — Options, trade-offs, others' input — 'I told the team what to do'
  • Leverage — Others build on it without you — Only works while you are in the room
  • Evidence — A metric before and after — 'It went well'

What you will be able to do

  • Tell a story about setting technical direction that someone could critique.
  • Describe how you make an architecture decision and record it.
  • Show how you multiply your impact through standards, tools and people.
  • Explain an engineering risk to a non-technical leader in business terms.

Interview questions

  • How have you set or changed the technical direction of a team or system?
  • How do you make architectural decisions and build agreement on them?
  • How do you scale your impact beyond what you can build yourself?
  • How do you grow other engineers into technical leaders?
  • How do you represent engineering concerns to non-technical stakeholders?
