Time Management
How to answer questions about competing priorities and tight deadlines: rank the work by impact, plan it, and tell people early what will not get done.
Overview
Time management questions sound simple: 'How do you handle several deadlines at once?' What the interviewer is really testing is judgment. When there is more work than time, something will slip. They want to know whether you choose what slips, or whether it just happens to you.
A weak answer describes effort: 'I stayed late and got it all done.' That tells the interviewer you have no system, and that your team only learns about trouble when a date is missed. A strong answer describes a repeatable method: you rank the work by impact, you protect time for the most important piece, and you tell the people who depend on you about the trade-off before it becomes a surprise.
This question also shows how you work with others. Saying no, asking your manager to choose between two tasks, or handing work to someone better placed are all signs of maturity, not weakness.
- Method — A clear way to rank work that you use every time — 'I just work harder'
- Priorities — Ranked by impact on users and the business — Done in the order they arrived
- Communication — Flags a conflict early, with options — Stays silent until a date is missed
- Limits — Says no, delegates or escalates when needed — Takes on everything alone
- Result — Names what shipped and what was knowingly dropped — Only mentions how busy it was
What you will be able to do
- Explain a simple, repeatable way you rank competing work.
- Tell one STAR story where you chose what to drop and said so early.
- Offer a stakeholder a clear choice instead of a silent slip.
- Show when you said no, delegated or escalated, and why that was right.
