ECS vs Lambda Deployment Patterns
Deployment strategies and update patterns for containerized versus serverless workloads.
Overview
What is being compared
ECS and Lambda reach the same deployment strategies through different lifecycle models. ECS supports blue-green through CodeDeploy, or rolling updates through a service update. Lambda uses function versions, aliases and traffic shifting to get equivalent strategies.
- Unit that is deployed — A new task set alongside the existing one — An immutable, numbered function version
- Strategies — Blue-green via CodeDeploy, or rolling via service update — Canary, linear or all-at-once via alias traffic shifting
- Traffic control — ALB listeners and target groups — Alias routing configuration with weights
- Pre-traffic validation — ALB test listener on a separate port — BeforeAllowTraffic hook
- Automatic rollback — CloudWatch alarm triggers CodeDeploy — CloudWatch alarm triggers CodeDeploy
- Good fit — Stateful connections, shifting across several services — Version management with aliases, canary function releases
An ECS blue-green deployment, message by message
CodeDeploy drives the whole exchange. Users keep reaching the current task set until the new one has passed its tests on the test listener.
> [!TIP] Always invoke Lambda by alias, never by ARN or version number, so traffic shifting stays invisible to callers.
> [!TIP] Task sets beside function aliases, a Lambda canary from hook to promotion, and the choice of strategy play step by step in Visual Explanation below.
