Helm vs Kustomize

Kubernetes package manager with templating versus configuration overlay system.

Overview

What is being compared

Both manage Kubernetes manifests. Helm packages them as charts rendered by a Go templating engine, which enables parameterized deployment of complex applications. Kustomize applies a base-and-overlay model to plain YAML without templating, treating configuration as data rather than code.

  • Model — Go templates filled from values — Patches applied on top of base YAML
  • Base files — Templates with placeholders — Plain YAML, never modified
  • Packages — Thousands of charts on Artifact Hub — No package repository
  • Releases — Tracked in the cluster; upgrade, rollback, history — None; kubectl or GitOps tool handles it
  • Trade-off — More powerful, harder to debug — Simpler, less flexible for deep customization
  • Best at — Distributing reusable packages — Environment-specific customization

How each one produces manifests

Helm renders chart templates with values into manifests and tracks the result as a release. Kustomize applies an environment's overlay patches to base YAML and produces plain manifests.

Using both together

They combine: Argo CD and Flux render an upstream Helm chart and apply Kustomize patches through post-rendering, so the chart is never forked.
