Reddit Engineering

Engineering blog from Reddit covering media infrastructure, ad serving, Flink-based validation, and experiment routing.

Overview

Reddit is the long-tail community platform of the internet, with hundreds of thousands of subreddits whose voting, ranking, and ad serving have to work coherently across wildly different content shapes from text to image to video. The blog's best content over the last two years has concentrated on the ads stack: real-time ad-event validation built on Apache Flink, a homegrown global retrieval-ranking model used to pick candidate ads, and the migration of ads pacing from a single-process service to a sharded fleet to keep budget enforcement strict at higher QPS. For interviews, 'Scaling Ads Pacing: from Singleton to Sharded' is a useful case study in stateful service sharding, and 'Introducing a Global Retrieval Ranking Model in Ads' anchors discussions of two-stage ranking systems.
