Shopify Engineering
Engineering blog from Shopify covering Rails scaling, real-time ML, event streaming, and e-commerce infrastructure.
Overview
Shopify powers a meaningful slice of independent e-commerce on the internet and famously runs the largest production Ruby on Rails monolith in existence, sharded into pods that survive Black Friday. The blog's most distinctive content shows how they make a monolith scale: horizontal Rails sharding on top of Vitess, change-data-capture pipelines that stream every row mutation off the sharded monolith for downstream consumers, and server-sent events for real-time UI streaming without web-socket complexity. For interviews, 'Horizontally scaling Rails backend with Vitess' is excellent prep for any database-sharding question, and 'Capturing Every Change From Shopify's Sharded Monolith' is a model answer for designing a CDC pipeline on top of an OLTP store.
