Mentoring and Coaching
How to show that you help other engineers grow: you meet them where they are, hand over ownership step by step, and can point to what changed.
Overview
Mentoring questions check whether you make the people around you better. For senior roles this is part of the job: a senior engineer is expected to raise the level of the team, not only ship their own work. The interviewer wants to hear how you found out what someone needed, how you helped without doing the work for them, and what they could do afterwards that they could not do before.
Two words are worth keeping apart. Mentoring means sharing your experience and advice. Coaching means asking questions that help the other person find the answer. Good mentors switch between the two: they tell when the person is stuck and the stakes are high, and they ask when the person can work it out and learn more by doing so.
The weak version of this answer is about you: how much you knew, how many hours you gave. The strong version is about them: where they started, what you changed, and how they now work without you.
- Diagnosis — Found the specific gap first — Gave generic advice
- Method — Adjusted to the person; asked more than told — Took over or fixed it for them
- Independence — Handed over ownership step by step — They still depend on you
- Evidence — What they can do now that they could not before — 'They really liked working with me'
- Scale — Turned repeated lessons into docs or sessions — Everything stayed one to one
The example stories on this page are fiction. They show the shape of a good answer; tell your own.
