GitHub Engineering

Engineering blog from GitHub covering code search, Git performance, database partitioning, and merge queue systems.

Overview

GitHub hosts the majority of the world's open-source and a huge share of private source code, and the engineering team operates one of the few products where every customer is also a power user. The blog's most useful content is concentrated in three areas: production-scale code search built on a custom indexer (Blackbird) that handles trillions of tokens across millions of repos, MySQL operations including a multi-year journey to partition the relational database backing every issue and pull request, and Git internals scaled for repositories that ship hundreds of merges per day. For interviews, 'The technology behind GitHub's new code search' is the reference for any large-scale search-indexing question, and 'Partitioning GitHub's relational databases to handle scale' is a candid case study in vertical-to-horizontal database migration.
