Instacart Engineering
Engineering blog from Instacart covering search, ML recommendations, fraud detection, availability prediction, and logistics optimization.
Overview
Instacart runs grocery delivery against a uniquely messy catalog where over 200 million SKUs across thousands of stores are constantly going out of stock, getting renamed, or being substituted, which makes search and availability prediction the central engineering problem. The blog is one of the most prolific in the industry on three topics: hybrid retrieval that fuses lexical, embedding, and LLM-based search ranking, a real-time availability prediction system that decides whether each item is actually on the shelf right now, and an end-to-end ML platform from feature engineering to distributed training and serving. For interviews, 'Optimizing search relevance using hybrid retrieval' is excellent prep for modern search-design questions, and 'Predicting real-time availability of 200 million grocery items' is the reference for any inventory-prediction problem.
